Alive agents have scar tissue. Decision patterns accumulated from real situations. You feel the difference on the first unexpected input. The template hedges or defaults to something safe. The alive one has an opinion.

Templates define what an agent does. Alive souls define how an agent thinks when you hit a situation the instructions didn't cover. Most agent work happens in that gap.
